Smell Training to Recover From Smell Loss (Anosmia)
Olfactory or smell training may help restore a lost sense of smell, particularly after a viral upper respiratory infection or head trauma where no physical nasal obstruction is present. Olfactory training is analogous to physical therapy used to help restore limb movement after a stroke or ear training for singers and musicians. Much of the basis found over the benefit of olfactory training or "smell therapy" stems from German research published in 2009 and later supported by a 2020 meta-analysis. What they found was that about 30% of patients who had undergone the smell training experienced some improvement in olfactory function compared to the group who had not participated.

The Origin of World Taste & Smell Day.
Dr. Jinggou Chen, an ENT from China, reached out to Monell Scientist Danielle Reed during the first year of the pandemic, asking why there wasn't a day devoted to taste and smell. Reed shared the email with Jennifer Trachtman, who started reaching out to colleagues, leading to the formation of a founding committee. The committee set out to create a day of recognition, World Taste & Smell Day, deliberately global and uniting the worlds of taste and smell. The association aims to elevate the role taste and smell play in our lives and expand conversations about them to new audiences.
Smell, Taste and Flavor
Our sense of smell plays a crucial role in the perception of flavor, accounting for 75% to 95% of what we recognize as taste. Flavor is a complex, multisensory experience created in the brain from taste, smell, and other sensory elements like appearance, temperature, and texture. While true taste occurs on the tongue, detecting salt, sweet, bitter, sour, and umami, flavor is an amalgamation of sensory inputs with smell as a major contributor.
