In honor of World Taste and Smell Day 2024, FOODMAP Network, Global Consortium for Chemosensory Research (GCCR), SenseNet Network, Shandong Institute of Food Science and Technology will present an online international science-based presentation that will explore the value of these senses in health, aging, and overall scientific knowledge, proiding insights into how sensory experiences and their proper care could improve people’s quality of life and impact daily life.
Topics will include: a preview of the book, “How Smell Affects our Health”; a presentation by Maria Veldhuizen, Chair of the GCCR on “What is Flavor?” an introduction of the Smell and Taste Alliance by Dr. Jingguo Chen; and session on talking about smell and taste; smell training, and a roundtable discussion.

The new National Smell and Taste Center (NSTC) has launched. It is an NIH-wide effort led by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). The $100,000 "Smell Dysfunction in Pediatrics" Innovation Challenge
The Qatar Research Development Innovation Council (QRDI) and Sidra invite proposals from startups, SMEs, and technology companies to provide a diagnostic tool for smell dysfunction. They are looking to develop a non-invasive diagnostic device which can quickly (<10mins) identify potential smell dysfunction or loss in children. These results should integrate into electronic health records (EHR) management systems and the technique should be simple enough to train current medical staff. More information on the challenge is available here.
This challenge offers $100,000 for the development of easy-to-use devices capable of detecting loss of smell in children that is agnostic to cultural/regional inputs.

Anosmia Awareness Day
The medical term for the loss of smell is known as anosmia. It is most often caused by an infection or injury to your nose or brain and can be temporary or permanent depending on what has happened. There are two types of loss of smell — hyposmia and anosmia. Hyposmia is a partial loss of the sense of smell, whereas anosmia is when someone has completely lost their ability to smell anything at all!

Rachel Herz, PhD has been actively conducting research on the senses, emotion, perception, motivated behavior and cognition since 1990. Dr. Herz is a TED speaker, has published 100 original research articles to date, and has received numerous awards and grants. She is on the faculty at Brown University, a professional consultant to various aromachemical industries, and is frequently called upon as an expert witness in legal cases involving the sense of smell. Dr. Herz is also actively involved in outreach, advocacy, and education on the senses of smell and flavor, and is a founding advisory board member of Fifth Sense, and Smell and Taste Association of North America, Innovation Advisor to The World Taste and Smell Association, Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee for AChemS, and the Chief Scientific Advisor for OVR Technology.
